I had the similar problem using Vista and windows 7 but not XP. As I research into the cause, I discover Vista / Win7 use a newer method of MTP transfer rather than just the simple and more common PTP. On my Windows XP, call camera devices show up via PTP as USB Mass Storage. On vista/win7, I had the same failure to connect problem. As it turn out, the new MTP method required a serviced call Portable Device Enumerator Service, which I removed using a special hack tool call VLITE to reduce the size of my Windows Vista/7 installation. You should try this: START / RUN/ type: services.msc Scroll down to see if your Portable Device Enumerator Service is set to AUTO then reboot. Either way, it was a pain in the butt.
