I was unable to do an initial set-up of my Sonos system. There was no way the Sonos Desktop controller would find any of my zone players. After a long search Sonos confirmed that the problem lies with the ADSL VOIP modem/router/switch I have: the KPN Experia box (Gigaset SX551) manufactured by Siemens. This home gateway was delivered with combined VOIP/Internet access services sold bij KPN and all of it's subsidiaries in the Netherlands (Xs4all, Planet Internet, Het Net). Please note that the problem only exists with the Siemens (silver/grey) and not with the newer Speedtouch model. Some 600.000 Experia's have been distributed in the Netherlands, so this is an issue that potentially impacts many people.
It appears that this modem/router/switch is incompatible with the Sonos products, apparently related to its UPnP functionality. I have also heard that KPN has developed a firmware upgrade that should resolve the problem. However at this point in time I am unaware whether this upgrade has already been delivered to any of the modems yet. There is a workaround, which consist in connecting another router to one of the ethernet ports of your Experia box. Then connect the Sonos zone player to this second router. It is important the second router deliver IP-addresses from another range than the first one. The Experia box hands-out addresses in the 192.168.1.x range, the second router could hand them out in the 192.168.2.x range.
