Harry Gray, Caltech 'Atoms First seems to be the flavor of the year in chemistry textbooks, but many of them seem to be little more than rearrangement of the chapters. It takes a master like McQuarrie to go back to the drawing board and create a logical development from smallest to largest that makes sense to students.' Hal Harris, University of Missouri-St Louis 'McQuarrie's book is extremely well-written, the order of topics is logical, and it does a great job with both introductory material and more advanced concepts. Students of all skill levels will be able to learn from this book.'

Mark Kearley, Florida State University. What I found quite helpful in understanding the material presented is how thorough the book is. You actually discover the mechanics behind what you're learning instead of just memorizing paragraphs for the sake of regurgitating it later!

For example, the author does indeed have explanations of the background of equations because without them you're just memorizing formulas by rote. I very much enjoyed the history insets of chemists (they're not even IN the main body of text as others imply) and found the examples of equation usage to be more than satisfactory. There are multiple examples of their usage in slow-motion then there are many examples for you to do yourself. I cannot STAND when other books give an equation, explain how to use it like it's a simple machine, and then you walk away without having any idea how and why the machine actually works!

Gallogly was very good at avoiding this teaching error; the underground mechanics of concepts are there so you can UNDERSTAND the machine instead of just use it. Download Ice Age 1 Movie In Tamil. I'm at a loss to understand the reviews that claim that the book is boring. I used an example from this exact book in my UCLA Personal Statement when describing where my passion for biochemistry comes from!

It's far from boring: it's mature. It's mature because it is thorough, does not hold your hand through each paragraph, and gets to the point. If you are not a Bio or Chem major, I do not suggest this book since it requires a desire to understand the material. However, if you want to go into the sciences, this book is worth its weight in gold; I still have mine from years ago for reference!

Good luck in class! McQuarrie, et.al. Is a good workhorse of a text for general (college-level)chemistry with a **very reasonable** price tag.

Will everyone like it? Of course not!

There is not and never will be *one* book that everyone will like in a given chem class. Cons: There are not a lot of bells & whistles (i.e., drawings and colors are kept to a minimum), which is why the text is priced lower than most others. Not crazy about his thermodynamics chapter, there are other, much more lucid treatments of the subject out there that will engage the beginner and give thermo some meaning/relevance to their lives. I supplement w/ the corresponding chapter from Silberberg. I think there are books w/ better problems sets, but Sapling provides enough variety in types of questions. Pros (besides price): Provides students with a thorough background in the basics, in a way that is not insulting to their intelligence.
